Department of Automobile Engineering was started in the year 1949 at MIT and was offering a three-year course in Automobile Engineering for science graduates. Post graduate programme was started in the year 1978. Subsequently on the formation of Anna University in the year 1978, MIT became a constituent institute of the University and the department too became a university department of Anna university. From 1996 onwards 4-year degree programme for the students of higher secondary course was introduced. The young and vibrant faculty is the backbone of the department. All of them are highly qualified and well experienced.All the faculty members are publishing the findings of their research work in reputed journals and conferences at regular intervals. The department has a separate library of its own having more than five hundred books including a number of rare books on Automobile Engineering. It also keeps the research thesis and project works of the students of Automobile Engineering. Every year about 85% of our students are recruited as soon as they enter the seventh semester. Some of the companies where our students have secured campus placement include: Ashok Leyland, Tate Motors, Ford, Hyundai, Daimler benz, Caterpillar, Maruthi, TVS, Renault-Nissan etc. Some are pursuing higher studies in UK, USA & Germany.
